Seminar on combat frost in agriculture

The Arab Organization for Agricultural Development plans to hold a regional seminar about combating frost. The seminar will be held in collaboration with the Syrian Ministry of Environmental Affairs and will last from March 10 - 12.

The seminar aims at substituting experiences concerning methods to combat frost, review methods and apply them among cooperating countries, director of the Regional Office in Amman, Jordan, Dr. Abdul Hamid al-Kaid told reporters.

Participants from Jordan, Iraq, Syria, Palestine and Lebanon will discuss use of weather data, chemical methods and spray irrigation to prevent frost, he said. "They are also to study the use of petroleum furnaces along with their impact on productivity," he added.

Al-Kaid said the plan being set up for this year by the organization includes a national training session in coordination with Syrian Ministry of Agriculture and Reclamation of Land. The course is to be held on March 14 - 19.

"It aims at reinforcement of trainees' abilities in Arab countries to execute and administrate agricultural projects," regarding the aim behind the running of those seminars and courses, Dr. al-Kaid said. "The trainees will also be informed of suitable forms and methods they can follow to improve the administration and execution of agricultural projects," he stated.

It is also to focus on financial, economic, environmental and social analyses of the projects, he added.

"Financing of the projects will be taken into consideration," he stated. Representatives of agricultural ministries are due to take part in the session.

In coordination with Syrian Ministry of Agriculture and Reclamation of Land, the Organization is to arrange a third training course. This course will be about applying new techniques in augmentation of thicket and forest wealth. It will run from April 11 -16, 1998.

"The session aims at increasing the qualifications of Arab cadres who work in the field of running forest," al-Kaid said. They should be familiarized with modern technology used in development of thicket wealth and specifying the most suitable methods for the circumstances in Arab countries, he added.

All Arab nations are due to participate in this course.
