Army demands chasing a previous prime minister judicially
Algeria, International, 2/7/1998

An Algerian newspaper said the Algerian army wants to take judicial action against a previous prime minister, due to his claim that the Algerian army is responsible for the country's massacres.

The former prime minister, Abd El-Hamid El-Ibrahimi (who lives in London as a refugee), has made these accusations in interviews with newspapers and foreign news agencies.

A military source told ArabicNews.com that the decision to pursue Ibrahimi judicially has not been taken yet. The Algerian general staff's leadership is setting up a case to specify the accusations which might be directed at the previous prime minister.

Ibrahimi said the military body has not changed in last few years as compared with the civilian authority.

Ibrahimi said that the army urges on the violent actions to limit public and individual liberties to remain in power. He also accused the army of supporting French interests in Algeria.

Ibrahimi left power in 1988 after working as minister of planing, then as prime minister in El-Shazeli Ben Gadid's era. In 1990 he chose exile in London.
