Jordan-Regional, Politics, 2/7/1998

Jordanian Prime Minister Dr. Abdul-Salam al-Majali yesterday evening received Arab League Secretary-General Dr. Esmat Abdul Meguid who arrived in Amman from Baghdad.

The chief of the Arab League made a three-day visit to Iraq where he met with Iraqi President Saddam Hussein and other Iraqi senior officials.

Majali and Meguid reviewed the latest developments in the Iraqi governmental crisis with the UN. They also discussed the efforts being made to solve the crisis through diplomacy.

Majali praised the efforts made by the Arab League to defuse the crisis. He also reaffirmed Jordanian attitude regarding supporting all efforts made by the Arab League to solve the problem peacefully to, "avoid a catastrophe for the Iraqi people." Such a disaster would affect the region for a long time in the future, he added.

"The situation is very dangerous," Abdul Meguid said. "It requires all efforts to be made to avoid a new war in the region," he stated. The speaker of Jordanian Upper House attended the meeting.

Jordanian Foreign Minister Dr. Fayez al-Taraunah also met with Meguid. They discussed the Iraqi governmental crisis with the UN Security Council and the initiative made by the Arab League to solve the crisis via diplomatic efforts.
