King Hassan appoints Socialist party secretary as premier
Morocco, Politics, 2/5/1998
King Hassan II of Morocco has assigned the secretary general of the opposition people's forces Socialist Unity Party, Abdul Rahman al-Yousifi (74) to form a new Moroccan cabinet, MENA reported from Rabat. Observers say that appointing al-Yousifi for this task reflects the intention of the Moroccan King to pursue the "alternative policy" despite Parliamentary elections held on November 14,1997, which gave the rightists more than 70% of votes.
Al-Yousifi is expected to propose to the King a coalition government in which the National Rally for Independents led by former Premier Ahmad Osman will occupy a ranking position.
Al-Yousifi, who was born in Tangier, started his political career early when he was 19 with the Independent Party. In 1953 he joined the armed resistance against the French occupation. He was jailed twice because of his leftist ideologies in 1959 and 1963 respectively, MENA added. He was with his friend al-Mahdi Bin Baraka who was kidnapped and killed in Paris in 1965.
