Moratinos and Santer to discuss peace process halt

The special envoy of the European Union to the Middle East, Miguel Moratinos arrived in Cairo today for talks concerning ways of enhancing the Arab-Israeli peace process.

During this three-day visit to Cairo, Moratinos will hold talks with the Egyptian Foreign Minister Amr Moussa, and Dr. Osama El-Baz, the president's political advisor. Talks will concentrate on ways of pulling the Middle East process out its current deadlocked state and the probable role of the European Union in the process.

Moratinos arrived yesterday to Damascus where he held talks with Syrian President Hafez al-Assad and Syrian Foreign Minister Farouk al-Sharaa. These talks the also tackled European Union efforts to restart the peace process.

The head of the European Commission, Jacques Santer, will visit Egypt Friday within a Middle East tour which will concentrate on the peace process. Santer will arrive in Damascus on February 11to sign the European - Syrian participation agreement.
