Jordan's Lower House opposes any attack against Iraq.
Jordan, Politics, 2/5/1998

Jordan's Council of Deputies on Wednesday condemned threats of a military attack against Iraq, concerning the escalation of Iraqi standoff against the UN.

"We condemn any threats of use of force against Iraq," the deputies said, "diplomacy should be regarded."

The US has warned of a possible military attack against Iraq if Saddam Hussein continues to defy the international community.

The council said the use of firepower would result in dangerous consequences. It might result in endangering stability in the region. It may lead to the Middle East peace process being toppled, they said.

In a closed-door session Prime Minister Abdul Salam al-Majali briefed the deputies of the latest developments in the crisis.

Members of parliament later told reporters that al-Majali did not tell them more than what themselves knew before.

The deputies in a statement urged both the UN Security Council and Iraq to reach what they called, "rational acceptable resolutions" to ensure implementation of UN demands.

The deputies refrained from attacking the US directly.
