Algeria condemns human rights report for inaccuracy
Algeria, Politics, 2/5/1998
The Algerian government has condemned the annual human rights report published by the American State Department.
Estimates in the report said that the dead in Algeria's 6 years of continuing conflict number 70,000.
An Algerian Foreign Ministry spokesman said this report lacks accuracy and that the real number of victims is 26,536 civilians and elements of the security forces. The official Algerian death toll was announced last month by Prime Minister Ahmed Oyehiah.
