Differences in the Algerian Parliament
Algeria, Politics, 2/3/1998

After two hours of waiting in the back area of the Algerian parliament, the heads of the parliamentary coalitions had decided to postpone a discussion of the Algerian security situation under the pretext that only 178 members attended out of the total number of the parliament members. Passing any bill requires the consensus of 191 votes.

The heads of the parliamentary coalitions had reached an agreement through which they will open a discussion of the Algerian security situation after the majority was convinced by the verbal answer offered by the government. They decided to open this discussion on February 10.

One of the heads of the parliamentary coalitions who declined to give his name, said discussing the Algerian security situation aims to achieve three goals; reducing public anger, preventing any outside intervention in the internal affairs of Algeria, and giving a push to the new Algerian government.
