Military confrontation erupts between Sudan and Eriterea

A Sudanese military spokesman said in statements published on Monday by the Sudanese daily al-Rai al-Am that during recent days Eritrea has bombarded border areas in eastern Sudan and in retaliation the Sudanese artillery has fired on Eritrea.
The paper quoted the spokesman, Maj. Gen. Sirr al-Khatem, as saying that areas surrounding Kasla were exposed to artillery shelling for the second time in three days from Eritrea and that Sudanese armed forces have silenced Eritrea's shelling.
Meanwhile, the Sudanese daily Alwan said as a result of the clashes, heavy losses were inflicted on the Eritrean side.
