Military escalation in south and east of Sudan
Sudan, Military, 1/31/1998
The military escalation in Sudan continued yesterday in its south and east as the Sudanese army said it stopped an offensive carried out by southern rebels at the dawn two days ago.
A Sudanese official source said the number of deaths in the Sudanese army on the southern front was 20, among whom were 4 officers. He added that the rebels retreated after heavy fighting.
However, the spokesperson of the Sudanese Popular Liberation Army said that his forces occupied the city of Wau.
The Sudanese government linked those offensives carried out by the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Sudan, led by John Garang, against strategic sites on the southern front with military operations carried out by opposition forces on the eastern front around the city of Kasla.
