Algerian-Libyan relations improve
Algeria-Libya, Politics, 1/30/1998
Algerian-Libyan relations have improved recently after they had been strained following the expulsion of Algerian citizens, who were subjected to beatings in a detention camp in the border center of Al Dayab, from Libya two months ago.
Sources said this improvement came in response to a western plan by NATO to assign forces for peacekeeping operations in the North African region.
A Spanish newspaper disclosed that NATO has prepared a proposal to form emergency forces to intervene in the North African region upon the eruption of any emergency. This proposal caused great anxiety in all the capitals of the North African region.
Sources said the Algerian and Libyan have similar views regarding the NATO proposal and that bilateral relations have overcome the recent crisis.
Algerian President Zeroual told Libyan leader Moammar Gaddafi that the NATO proposal endangers the interests of the two countries, which makes it inevitable for the two countries to have more cooperation.
