Damascus to help Iraqi children; Egyptian medicines to Iraq
Regional, Economics, 1/30/1998
The Syrian Red Cross society is launching a fund-raising campaign for the children of Iraq, said chairwoman of the society Kamar Qazoun, adding that the campaign is to start following Eid al-Fitr.
Within the same context the Syrian Ministry of Economy issued a decision permitting economic relations with Iraq in all spheres, but only in accordance with UN resolutions concerning sanctions imposed on Iraq. This decision, however, abrogates a Syrian decision taken in 1983 banning trade cooperation and imports and exports with Iraq.
Meanwhile, the director of the Egyptian Holding Company for Medications, Dr. Galal Ghorab, confirmed that the discussions of an Egyptian delegation with Iraqi officials in Baghdad resulted in reaching an initial agreement through which the Egyptian company will export medications and medical supplies to the Iraqi market worth L.E.80 million during the upcoming period.
Egyptian medication worth L.E. 35 million will be shipped to Iraq during the Lesser Bairam. The shipment includes medications worth L.E. 10 million exported by the private sector.
