Iraq's involvement in massacre of Iraqis in Jordan
Jordan, Local, 1/29/1998

Jordanian sources informed ArabicNews.com that there are indications that the Iraqi government was involved in the Amman massacre a week ago in which 5 Iraqis were murdered, including the Iraqi embassy's Charge D'Affairs, in order to regain millions of dollars that had been under the control of Hussein Kamel Al Magid when he arrived in Jordan during the summer of 1995.

The sources stated that Hussein Kamel -- who had been killed by an armed group after his return to Iraq at the request of the sons of the Iraqi President Saddam Hussein, Odei and Qasey -- had been running money for the Iraqi regime as he was the chief official of the Iraqi armament program. He also received this money because he was the second ranking official in the government when he was the Iraqi minister of external trade, before Odei, curtailed his responsibilities.

The sources stated that at least one of the victims had contacts with one of the sons of Saddam before his death.

Meanwhile, a Jordanian source said the Iraqi decision to release Jordanian prisoners after the massacre indicates that there are political motives behind the massacre.
