Assassination case: three death sentences and four life imprisonment sentences
Egypt, Judicial, 1/28/1998

After a trial that lasted for 9 months in one of the largest terrorist cases in Egypt known as the "big case of assassinations," the court gave its verdicts on 8 terrorist crimes for which 38 suspects had been arrested, mostly university and high school students.

The Supreme State Security Court sentenced three to death, four to life imprisonment with hard labor, three to 15 years in prison, ten to 10 years, and three to 5 years in prison, while 15 were acquitted.

State security prosecutors had charged the defendants with murder and with organizing a clandestine group that aimed to usurp power.

Meanwhile, the Egyptian authorities released 300 detainees who are members of Islamic fundamentalist groups after they said their penitence and pledged not to return to their former beliefs and not to participate in unlawful activities. Most of those released belong to the Gamaa Islamya (Islamic Group) and the Jihad (Resistance) organization.
