Interior Minister investigates causes of explosion at Security camp
Egypt, Local, 1/28/1998

Egyptian Interior Minister Habib Al Adli ordered an investigation of the causes of an explosion that occurred in one of the Central Security camps two days ago, resulting in the injury of 42 officers and soldiers.

The investigation will be overseen by the deputy minister for the examination and inspection department.

A security source said the initial investigation showed that the explosion occurred when explosives, that had been in storage for a long time and of a type that had gone out of use, were being handled. The explovises became unstable and were not handled properly when they were taken out of storage by soldiers, resulting in the explosion.

The source refuted reports that the investigation will continue side by side with another investigation run by the state prosecutor. He said the ministry's investigation aims to identify those responsible within the camp in order prevent such accidents in the future.

The source also said some of those who had been injured left the hospitals after they recovered.
