Constitutional committee revokes ban on political parties
Sudan, Politics, 1/28/1998
In a step that had been considered a lifting of the ban that had been imposed on political parties in Sudan, the constitutional committee approved freedom of gathering and organization according to the freedom, rights and duties laws that safeguards the freedom of speech, publication, travel, private life, security and possession.
The leader of the Democratic Unionist Party, Al Sherif Zein Al Abedin, expressed his readiness to participate in the current government on condition that the political charter that had been signed recently should be put into effect.
The second round of meetings of the National Conference's political organization will be held on February 14. The National Conference is expected to turn into a political party that will be led by the parliament's speaker Dr. Hassan Al Turabi.
A source in the National Constitution Committee refuted news that the freedom of organization that had been ratified by the constitution committees does not mean the freedom of organization within the National Conference.
The source said the constitution did not refer in any of its articles to the National Conference and said the restoration of the party's activities has become a reality that awaits the legal arrangements which will be put into force by the presidency and the Parliamentary National Council.
