Khaddam: Turkish-Israeli alliance endangers Arab security
Syria, Politics, 1/27/1998

Syrian Vice-President Abdul Halim Khaddam on Monday stressed that no one in Syria accepts relinquishing one inch of Syria's land to its enemies.

In an interview with Dubai TV Khaddam added that Syria has developed a far-reaching strategy on national work that includes the Arab-Israeli conflict and the creation of a strong Syria that can defend itself as well as the Arab nation.

He added that the struggle against Israel is not a conflict between Israel and Syria or Lebanon alone, but between Israel and the Arab states, and Syria is working to restate the Arab dimension of this struggle, and warned of the dangers of normalization with the enemy, calling for reactivating the role of the Arab League.

The Syrian vice-president emphasized the need for pushing the peace talks forward, confirming Syria's readiness to resume peace talks from the point at which they stopped, adding that the intransigence of Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is the main obstacle hindering the peace talks and causing their deadlock.

On Turkish-Israeli military cooperation, Khaddam said this alliance is mainly directed against the Arab states. "Arabs should do more to face this danger which threatens their security and their own existence," he said.

On Iraq, Khaddam stressed that Syria opposes any military strike against the Iraqi people, noting the need to preserve Iraq's unity.
