King Hussein of Jordan receives Israeli defense minister
Jordan-Israel, Politics, 1/27/1998

Yesterday Jordan's King Hussein received Israeli Defense Minister Yitzhak Mordechai. Crown Prince Hassan attended the ceremony, during which regional and international efforts being made to overcome the obstacles facing the peace process were discussed.

There was an expanded meeting attended by Jordanian Prime Minister Dr. Abdul-Salam al-Majali, the Joint Chiefs Staff of the Jordanian Army and the Israeli ambassador to Amman.

King Hussein reaffirmed the necessity of honoring the previous agreements reached between Israel and the Arab countries.

"We ought to do the utmost to bring the Middle East peace process back on track," King Hussein stated. "We must push it toward a complete and permanent peace that secure the rights of all sides," he added.

In a speech he made before some 200 political, party and religious figures on the Arab circle in Israel the King added "One who tries to frighten people away from peace is not only the enemy of peace rather the enemy of life and the interests of coming generations."

King Hussein said the alternative to peace for both the Arabs and Israel is "more killings; death, demolishing and destruction." He said he will "confront all forces aiming at undermining the peace process."
