A modern electoral law for Jordan

Jordan's cabinet authorized a higher commissioner to set up a modern electoral law to make elections easier, Prime Minister Dr. Abdul-Salam al-Majali told reporters.

There is no intention at this time to change the laws of professional unions and political parties, he added.

Meanwhile, no cabinet reshuffle has yet been considered, Majali stated. Reshuffling the government is, however, the King's prerogative, he added. "I will really be happy to discuss this subject with his highness," he said, "but until the now there has been nothing concerning the reshuffle." he added.

The Jordanian weekly al-Majd had reported that changes in main governmental posts are expected in February. The report said the changes will include a total reshuffle of Jordan's Cabinet. The sources also expected the change to include dissolving Parliament, which was elected in November 1997.

Answering a question concerning the possible release of Iraqi prisoners in Jordan who were sentenced for committing crimes in Jordanian territories similar to those Jordanians -- who were freed last week by the Iraqi government -- committed in Iraq, the prime minister said that they were studying the situation.
