Jordan's Security Police launch arrests of Iraqis living illegally in Jordan
Jordan-Iraq, Local, 1/26/1998
Jordan Security Police yesterday started to arrest Iraqis living illegally in Jordan. Arab al-Yawm newspaper today wrote that lorries were deployed to gather Iraqis from streets and to deport them at once to Iraq.
Hundreds of lawyers are defending Iraqi cases to prevent their deportation, it added. The arrests follow the mass killing of 6 Iraqis and 2 Egyptians two weeks ago.
Asked about the ongoing investigation into the killing, "I could not certify whether the criminals fled Jordan or not," Jordanian Interior Minister Nazir Rashid told reporters.
Rashid dismissed hopes that the criminals would be identified before Ramadan Bairam.
