European Union's investigation in Algeria
Algeria, Politics, 1/24/1998
Algerian sources said the agreement between Algeria and the European Union to continue discussions represents an important political point.
They added that one of the most important benefits gained by Algeria as a result of a visit last week by a European Union delegation is that Algeria made its European partners to examine the terrorism case.
These developments come amid news that security forces killed 51 terrorists who were held responsible for carrying out the massacre in Sidi Hamad. A girl that had been kidnapped by the terrorists led the security forces to them after she managed to escape.
The sources also said the Algerian government informed the EU delegation that the political crisis had been solved a long time ago through holding presidential, parliamentary and municipal elections. It said the security problem is not related to political problems and that it is related more to the international war against terrorism.
Algeria also informed the delegation that ending so-called human rights violations will be dealt with within a report that will be submitted to the human rights organizations within the coming two months.
The sources said the government informed the European group that Islamic Fundamentalist groups carrying out the massacres receive assistance from Euorpean networks -- known to the European governments -- for buying arms and financial support. The government gave the delegation a list of the names of the "European networks."
One of the groups that met with the delegation informed it that Algerian security forces are involved in some of those massacres, as a way to terrorize those voters who wanted to vote for Islamic parties in 1991.
Meanwhile, a government source said the delegation became fully convinced of the fact that army members are not involved in the massacres.
