Israel raids Hizbullah bases after soldier wounded
Lebanon-Israel, Military, 1/23/1998
Israeli warplanes attacked bases belonging to Hizbullah guerrillas in south Lebanon Thursday after an attack on Israeli troops wounded one soldier, security sources said.
Two jets fired two missiles over the Lweizeh hills in Iqlim al-Tuffah, just across from an Israeli-occupied enclave in the south. The planes later returned to fire two more missiles west of the village of Yater. There were no reports of casualties.
In retaliation the Lebanese army and resistance forces confronted the planes with anti-missile fire.
Earlier Thursday, Hizbullah issued a statement saying its fighters had ambushed an Israeli patrol on the edge of the occupied zone with machine-guns and mortars. The sources said the ambush was followed by heavy clashes between Israeli troops and the guerrillas during which Israeli gunners opened fire on some 10 villages facing the border zone.
One Israeli soldier was reportedly wounded in the clash with Hizbullah.
Meanwhile, Israeli forces intensified their aggressions against areas adjacent to the occupied part of South Lebanon and the Western Bekaa. Lebanese security sources said the occupation artillery on Thursday afternoon bombarded the course of al-Litani river, Lucy bridge and the area between Qalya and Zalaya.
Israeli occupation forces also on Thursday arrested at Beit Yahoun crossing Lebanese citizen Habin Ibrahim, 65, from the occupied town of Bleida after he took part in a funeral.
