Saudi Arabia refutes British claims on human rights
Saudi Arabia, International, 1/22/1998
Saudi Arabia has furiously replied to a criticism raised by a group of British Parliamentarians representing various parties in Britain concerning human rights conditions in Saudi Arabia. The Saudi ambassador in London, Ghazi al-Quseibi, said Saudi Arabia will never allow foreign governments to interfere in its internal affairs.
In a statement to the BBC on Wednesday night al-Quseibi added the report circulated in the British parliament against Saudi Arabia included groundless and old accusations. He expressed deep regret because some people reject Saudi traditions but want Saudi money.
However, the report of the human rights group at the British parliament said Saudi Arabia tortured prisoners, and members of the ruling family are involved in this matter. The report asked the British government to exert pressure on Saudi Arabia to sign human rights treaties which ban torture and permit independent commissions to monitor treatment of prisoners in Saudi jails.
