Jordan, Economics, 1/21/1998
The head of Jordan's stock exchange, Michelle Marto, estimated the circulation volume of the Amman Stock Exchange last year at 355 million dinars compared to 284.6 million dinars in 1996, an increase of 42.5%.
The Amman stock exchange's volume of circulation increased for the first time after its record of about 1.1 billion dinars in 1993, the greatest volume since the market's foundation. Since that time, trade on the stock exchange declined to 495 million dinars in 1994, 419 million dinars in 1995, and reached its lowest level in 1996 with 248.6 million dinars.
Marto said the potential number of shares increased by 10.3% in 1997 over to the level achieved in 1996.
The value of shares bought by non-Jordanian investors was estimated at 126 million dinars, compared to 44 million dinars in 1996.
