Demonstrations and accusations against Clinton and Kuwait
Iraq-Kuwait, Politics, 1/19/1998

Iraq accused the U.S. of preparing a wide-ranging assault on it (Iraq) said Nabel Negem the Iraqi ambassador in Cairo.

Negem said Kuwait is the spearhead for implementing this aggression, "We have all the evidence for this, as Americans try to find justifications for this planned aggression."

In Iraq, demonstrators burned a figure of President Clinton and British flags during a demonstration on the 7th anniversary of the Gulf war.

Saad Kasem Hamoudi the Iraqi deputy expressed resentment over the American military presence in the Gulf in a speech before the demonstrators, and accused Washington of using tensions between Baghdad and UN inspection teams as a pretext for its planed aggression.

The Iraqi youth shouted "Saddam will remain in power - whether the Americans approve of it or not - no dignity without Saddam - down with Americans - long live Saddam."

Iraq's President Saddam Hussein had threatened to kick the UN inspection team out of Iraq if they don't finish their assignment in 4 months. UN inspection team leader Richard Butler is in Iraq for negotiations on the scope of the inspections, and resolving outstanding problems that arose lately due to Iraqi demands for a change in the composition of the UN teams, which are made up mostly of "Anglo-Saxons," according to Iraq.

The US has stressed the need to resolve this issue diplomatically, while stating that its patience is limited and that it has not ruled out the use of force.

There is no support in the region for military action against Iraq.
