Israeli-Arab delegation to visit Syria this week
Palestine-Syria, Culture, 1/17/1998
Palestinian sources said that a Palestinian official of the "1948 Palestinians" (a term referring to Israeli-Arabs) visited Damascus 3 days ago to discuss with Syrian officials the expected visit to Syria by a delegation of the Israeli-Arabs.
Sources added that the list includes at least 3 members of the Israeli Knesset: Dr. Azmy Bishara from the National Democratic Tagamoua, Hashem Mehamid and Saleh Selim from the New Communist List (Hadash). The delegation also includes members of other parties represented in the Israeli Knesset, such as Ragaa Ghabaria from the Sons of the Country Movement, the Head of the Nazareth municipality Ramez Grais and a number of Druz who refused to serve in the Israeli army and joined the Democratic Front of Peace and Equality.
The sources added that the Palestinian delegation will visit Syria next week through Cairo where the members of the delegation will submit their Israeli passports to the Syrian Embassy in Cairo in exchange for traveling documents with which they will enter Syria.
The delegation will meet with the Syrian Foreign Minister Farouk Al Shara and the Syrian Vice President Abdel Halim Khadam. Members of the delegation are also expected to meet with Syrian President Hafez Assad, a subject which was not confirmed by the sources.
