Algeria bans imports of used cars
Algeria, Business, 1/17/1998

Algeria has banned imports of used cars, a measure that led to rising car prices on the local market. Algeria has also taken steps to reduce air pollution.

Algerian expatriates who work in European countries had been allowed to bring used cars with them to Algeria. They were also allowed to sell them under certain conditions so as not to compete with new car dealerships. But Algerian officials found out that those policies led to the creation of networks of individuals who made sales of imported European used cars their business.

The Algerian authorities opened the Algerian car market to Asian companies, especially Japanese and Koreans companies, to open dealerships in Algeria, which ended the European monopoly over the car trade in Algeria. Hyundai stated that it has opened dealerships in Wahran, Begaia, Telmesan, Seteif, Al Galfa and Terat in addition to its dealership in the capital, Algiers.

Official statistics showed that the Korean car companies achieved higher sales than the Japanese and European companies last year as a result of the Korean cars' lower prices and the availability of spare parts.

In other news, the Algerian government started to implement the new budget which was ratified by the parliament at the end of last year.
