Disputes in Algeria concerning European delegation's visit
Algeria-Regional, Politics, 1/17/1998
Algeria announced its approval of a European delegation's visit after massacres in which as many as 1,400 civilians have been killed during the current month.
The European Union delegation comprises 3 ministers from Britain, Austria, and Luxembourg, in order to discuss the latest massacres and the international role in combating terrorism.
Meanwhile the Algerian ambassador in Tunisia, Ismael Alawa, stated: "Algeria doesn't want any interference from anybody in its internal affairs."
He added that he is contesting the credibility of some mass media reports that accused the Algerian authorities of participating in the massacres.
Alawa said these massacres were due to lack of police and troops, although Algeria's area is greater than that of the "Arab Moroccan countries."
He also accused Germany and some European Union countries of coordinating with Iran to highlight the massacres in Algeria. Ambassadors from Tehran were withdrawn from Arab countries in which Iran is financing terrorism, he said.
At the same time party leaders and Tunisian newspapers issued statements that greatly oppose the internationalization of the recent Algerian crisis.
