Israeli general notes escalation of Lebanese resistance
Israel-Lebanon, Military, 1/16/1998
Israeli Chief of staff General Amnon Shahak said Lebanese national resistance operations against the occupation forces in the occupied part of south Lebanon have escalated. In a statement on Wednesday to Israeli radio, Shahak said that his forces are exposed almost daily to resistance operations.
He added the situation in South Lebanon has become very complex over several years, and that Israel hopes to maintain peace enabling Syria to withdraw from this region.
Concerning the fears, should Israel withdraw, of people in south Lebanon who collaborate with Israel, Shahak said those people know Israel supports them, adding that when achieved, peace will be good for the people of south Lebanon. Shahak expressed the hope that there will be a day when Lebanese resistance against Israel will stop in south Lebanon.
Meanwhile, conflicts between Israeli troops and the Lebanese resistance continued on Friday, Hizbullah fighters fired on an Israeli patrol, wounding three Israeli soldiers.
