Arab MPs support Cairo - Syria makes distinction
Regional-Syria, Politics, 1/15/1998

The emergency conference of the Arab Parliamentarians Union opened in Luxor on Wednesday, Chaired by the speaker of the Egyptian people's council, Ahmad Fathi Srour.

In his address to the conference, Speaker of the Syrian People's Assembly Abdul Qader Qaddoura noted the need to distinguish between systematic state terrorism practiced by Israel and people's legitimate struggle for liberating their lands from occupation and for self-determination. Qaddoura added that such legitimate national struggle is practiced by the Lebanese national resistance in the occupied south and by "our" people in the occupied Golan and in Palestine.

He underlined the solidarity of the Syrian people with the people of Egypt and stressed that any harm inflicted on the interests of Egypt harms the entire Arab nation.

Syria presented a working-paper to the conference condemning terrorism in all its forms and disclosing Israel's state terrorism against the Arab citizens in the occupied Golan, south Lebanon and the occupied Palestinian territories. It also called for holding an international conference under UN auspices to define terrorism and to distinguish between terrorism and the struggle of people to regain their lands and inalienable rights.

Many Arab MPs expressed their full moral support to Egypt and hoped that the decline in tourism that was experienced, as a result of the Luxor terrorist attack , will not last long. Many expressed the feeling that this form of terrorism that aims to destabilize and harm a country as whole must be strongly opposed as it damages the collective interest of citizens.
