Iranian Revolutionary Guard proud of 1979 occupation of US embassy
Iran, Politics, 1/15/1998

The Iranian Revolutionary Guard (IRG) renewed its support for the operation that led to the occupation of the US Embassy in Tehran and taking its staff as hostage in 1979. It said that without this operation, the Shah's roots would have continued to get stronger.

In its statement, the IRG said that this operation sprang from the Iranian people and it was concurrent with the first revolution which led to the removal of the Shah. This operation was heralded by the founder of the Islamic Republic, Ayatollah Khomeini, as the Second Revolution.

The statement of the IRG came a few days after the speech delivered by Iranian President Sayed Mohamed Khatami to the American people in which he said that the occupation of the US Embassy came during the revolution which was " a sort of war," under which "peace-time regulations are undermined." He also expressed his regret for the suffering of the American people caused by this operation.

The IRG's statement referred to Khatami's speech and said that the quick reply to this speech will maintain Iran's national pride and would honor this attack which had been called by Imam Khamenei as the Second Revolution.

Internal tension in Iran has been caused by the interpretations of the comments made by the president, and many supporters of the president are saying that the comments were being misreported and misinterpreted.
