Morocco: Democracy with integrity
Morocco, Politics, 1/9/1998
In another first, the Moroccan Socialist Union Party (SUP) secured the leading position in the parliament, as one of the party's leaders, Abdel Wahid Al Rady, was elected as speaker of the parliament.
He won 184 votes out of 325; his opponent, Popular Movement leader Mohammed Al Onsor, received 133 votes.
The National Tagamoua (Gathering) of the Free (NTF) refused to nominate any of its members for this position according to prior arrangements reached by the parties that will form the upcoming government.
Sources observing the election believe that those developments mean Morocco has a new democratic approach and that for the first time it has an election characterized by integrity. Sources also expected that the political situation will be clear after the election of the speaker of the Second Chamber of the parliament.
