France supports German proposal to intervene in Algeria
Algeria, International, 1/8/1998
France supported a German proposal on Algeria which suggested holding a meeting for the representatives of the European Union's foreign ministries in order to study the situation in Algeria.
The proposal also suggested sending a delegation to the Algerian capital in addition to offering help to the Algerian government in combating terrorism, as well as negotiating with all the political powers in Algeria -- including the Islamic -- powers in order to put an end to the violence there.
France's support was voiced by the assistant official spokesman of the French Foreign Ministry Yves Doutriaux, who condemned the brutal attacks against the Algerian people. He said that those attacks has no religious justification.
Doutriaux added that France is stressing the right of the people to be protected and that it is the duty of each government to provide its people with a safe and peaceful life.
