Turkish submarine will not participate in Gulf maneuvers
United Arab Emirates-Turkey, Military, 1/7/1998
The Turkish submarine Preveze T.S.G. arrived in port Zayed in the UAE yesterday on a friendly visit, and will remain there for 3 days amid conflicting news of its participation in naval maneuvers held by the UAE in the Gulf of Amman by the end of the week.
A statement released by the Turkish Embassy in Abu Dhabi confirmed the submarine's arrival and said that the commander of the UAE Naval Forces received it upon its arrival. It is expected that high-ranking officers at the UAE naval base in Abu Dhabi will visit the submarine during its sojourn.
The statement did not mention whether the submarine will participate in UAE naval maneuvers that will be held in the Gulf of Oman, but it quoted the commander of the submarine as saying that it will participate with UAE naval forces in the maneuvers that will be held on January 9 in the Gulf of Amman.
The UAE Armed Forces issued a statement in which it described the news that the Turkish submarine would participate in the UAE maneuvers as false.
