Qatar to construct a conference center in Amman
Jordan-Qatar, Economics, 1/7/1998

Qatar has decided to construct a conference center in Amman, Jordan. A Qatari delegation headed by the chairman of technical office of the Foreign Ministry visited Amman and met with deputy prime minister Jawad al-Annani and Minister of Public Works and Housing Nasser al-Lawzy. The two sides discussed Qatari ideas concerning such a center, the area required and other related technical issues.

The Emir of Qatar Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al-Thani told Jordanian Crown Prince Hassan during Hassan's visit to Doha that his state hoped to build a conference center in Amman.

Jordan's government has assembled a ministerial committee headed by the Foreign Minister and including the Public Works and Housing, Finance, Industry and Tourism, and Culture ministers to specify the proposed site for the project, the Minister of Public Works and Housing stated.

"The committee is authorized to negotiate with Qatari technical deputation," he said.

Primary indications showed that the palace would include a 3,000 seat hall, a number of smaller halls, an administrative building, parks, electronic audio-visual devices, public services and security instruments, he added.

He said the Qataris "want to offer competitive tenders to engineering consultant offices in Jordan."

Concerning the estimated expenditure for the center, al-Lawzy said that it was not possible to specify it in advance and that they had to wait for the primary designs from Qatari technicians who would visit Jordan later this month. But, al-Lawzy said, "Such complexes are estimated to cost between $12 million and $15 million."
