Meguid: Arab position towards crises in Iraq and Somalia
Regional, Politics, 1/5/1998
Esmat Abdel Meguid, the secretary-general of the Arab League, expressed his hopes that 1998 will view Arab reconciliation and termination of disputes among the Arab League's member states, and that Somalia will regain its territorial integrity.
He also expressed his appreciation for the Arab position, which confirms the necessity of maintaining the sovereignty and integrity of Iraq and Somalia.
He also praised the Tehran Islamic summit and called on Iran to respond to Emirate's suggestion to solve the dispute over three Emirates Islands (Greater Tanb, Lesser Tanb, and Abu Mousa) within Islamic principles, and good neighbor policy, according to the rules of the Organization of the Islamic Conference charter and international law.
Meguid affirmed the importance of achieving positive development in Arab relationships with Turkey due to geographical and historical relationships. Meguid also said he hopes that Turkey will not interfere in interior affairs of Arab states and that it will respect Arab rights to the water of the Degla and Euphrates rivers, over which Iraq and Syria have had disagreements over with Turkey.
