Lahd-Israeli forces kidnap chief of police
Lebanon-Israel, Military, 1/5/1998
A Lebanese civilian was wounded Monday, the first civilian casualty this year in the ongoing war of attrition between Israeli troops and guerrillas in south Lebanon, security sources said.
Ahmed Fayyad, 70, was injured when an Israeli shell landed near his home in Majdel Zoun on the edge of an Israeli-occupied border strip in the South.
The sources said Fayyad suffered from shrapnel wounds and was being treated in a nearby hospital.
The Israeli shelling of the village was apparently in retaliation to a Hizbullah attack on an Israeli outpost in the south earlier in the day.
Hizbullah announced it had ambushed the Israeli Radar position near the village of Bayyada with rockets, causing damage to the outpost. There were no Israeli casualties.
The sources said Lebanon would lodge a complaint with a cease-fire monitoring committee against Israel on grounds Israeli troops violated the terms of an understanding reached in April 1996 which prohibits attacks on civilians.
The five-nation committee convenes regularly in the Lebanese southern coastal town of Naqoura to discuss complaints.
Meanwhile, on Sunday a Lebanese National Resistance group attacked with heavy machine-gun fire and rockets and Israeli military force in Ali al-Taher position in the occupied portion of south Lebanon. The Lebanese resistance said that the attack scored direct hits.
On Sunday morning and late Saturday, Israeli forces bombarded with heavy artillery the hills of al-Jabor, Abu Rashid, Hafour Daraya and Maidoun in the Western Bekaa.
Further reports from southern Lebanon said that Israeli occupation forces continued terrorist practices against the people of Shabaa. Reports from the occupied South said a joint Israeli-Lahd militia force broke into several houses in the town and arrested one Lebanese citizen. Shabaa has been besieged for two successive weeks, during which several citizens were arrested.
Also on Saturday, Israeli occupation forces' positions in Abu Kamha district in the occupied strip of South Lebanon bombarded with heavy artillery al-Zaher mountain, Mimas and Marj al-Zouhour in Western Bekaa. Lebanese security sources said the Israeli artillery shelling was accompanied by the release of thermal light bombs in the atmosphere of the district.
Joint Lahd-Israeli forces kidnapped the chief of the police station in the occupied al-Fakhar Rashyya town and took him to an unknown place. Another citizen was arrested from Hasbayya.
Meanwhile in south Lebanon, a crossing in the western Bekaa which separates the occupied strip of the South and the rest of the Lebanese districts will open Monday following four years of closure. Security sources said the measures were taken to reopen Mimaz-Zaghla crossing to on-foot traffic only. The crossing will be dedicated for university students who are staying in the occupied strip of south Lebanon for study in the Lebanese university branches and at certain other sites.
