Al Turabi and Al Mahdi are willing to meet
Sudan, Politics, 1/2/1998

In a new development in relations between the Sudanese government and opposition, the speaker of the Sudanese parliament, Hassan Al Turabi, confirmed his willingness to meet with the former Sudanese premier and the leader of the Uma Party, Al Sadiq Al Mahdi, within the national reconciliation initiative.

Al Mahdi said that he is ready to meet with anyone in the Sudanese government, on the condition that such a meeting would result in reaching a comprehensive solution to the Sudanese crisis and that it should address all political issues.

The former Sudanese Foreign Minister and the head of the Popular Committee for the National Dialogue -- which had prepared the national reconciliation initiative -- Dr. Hussein Abu Saleh said that the initiative was accepted by both the government and the opposition. Saleh pointed out that Al Turabi and Al Mahdi agreed on meeting within this initiative but he stated that Al Mahdi put a condition on such a meeting, the government's acceptance of the principle of the peaceful exchange of authority and allowing plurality of points of view.

He added that Al Turabi welcomed Al Mahdi's proposals in light of the government's procedures that gave more freedoms, returned confiscated possessions and stopped military activities by the opposition.
