Olive oil sales earn 106 million dinars a year for Tunisia

The date harvest in the oases of the Tunisian south is estimated at 20,000 tons for the current season. Tunisian exporters have opened new markets, especially in Turkey, the Gulf area, Indonesia, the US, Argentina, Mexico, Germany, Britain, and France.
The intake from the olive oil harvest increased to 30% of total agricultural exports. Olive oil proceeds during the 5-year plan which ended last year reached 106 million dinars a year.
The area cultivated with the olive trees was 1.62 million hectares which represents 33% of arable lands. 57% of total Tunisian manpower works in the agricultural sector.
Tunisian Minister of Agriculture Sadek Rabeh estimated the volume of olive oil exports during the current season at 20,000 tons. The Tunisian producers are trying to increase the volume of oil exported to the USA, they are also trying to open new markets in Africa and Asia.
Tunisia stated that US olive oil imports reached 123,000 tons a year which are worth $270 million, Tunisia is trying to increase its share in US olive oil imports.
