Damascus refuses to renegotiate without conditions
Syria-Israel, Politics, 12/26/1997
Damascus refused Israeli Foreign Minister David Levi's suggestion of renegotiating without preconditions and said that any Arab country which attempted to negotiate with the Israeli government would not gain anything.
Syrian radio stated that Syria will not be entrapped like others, and that when Netanyahu's government refused the principles of the Madrid conference, renouncing late Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin's pledges of total withdrawal from the Golan Heights, the negotiations became futile and turned into a means of blackmail and of deceiving international public opinion.
