Libyan siege costs $24 billion US
Libya, Economics, 12/26/1997

An official Libyan source said that Libya's losses as a result of the UN sanctions imposed since 1992 are estimated at US $24 billion.

In a report released on Thursday, the Libyan foreign relations bureau said the most vulnerable sectors are oil, agriculture, and industry, where US $15 billion registered as losses due to a shortage of spare parts.

The report said the UN sanctions have obstructed all development plans in Libya which had intended to build the country's infrastructure, a matter which lead to increase in the prices of foodstuffs by 200%. Damages were also inflicted on the health sector as 17,000 patients died because they needed treatment outside the country.
