Protesting, the Palestinian Legislative Council suspends sessions
Palestine, Politics, 12/26/1997
The Palestinian Legislative Council (PLC) suspended its meetings through the end of the current month in protest of the Palestinian government failure to endorse the resolutions and recommendations the council issues.
The majority of members agreed on the decision in order to give the leadership of the council and its committees an opportunity to contact the Palestinian executive authorities to determine the relations between the legislative and executive agencies.
A member of the council, Azmy Al Shoriby, said that this suspension came as a result of the fact that the head of the executive authority ignored recommendations of the Ministers' Hearing Committee, which called for a cabinet reshuffle.
The PLC formed a committee to investigate reports of financial violations and illicit relationships with women on the part of some ministers.
During a meeting in October between Yasser Arafat and PLC members, it was agreed to form a joint committee of legislative and executive agencies to review the laws ratified by the council in order to submit them later to Arafat for ratification.
Members of the Fatah Movement who are also members of the PLC held a meeting in which they agreed upon the necessity of a cabinet reshuffle and to form a new government from the Fatah coalition.
