Socialist Union rejects joint nomination
Morocco, Politics, 12/25/1997
Hours before the inauguration of the first session of the Moroccan Parliament and before the Moroccan Monarch delivers his speech, the secretary-general of the Independence Party, Mohamed Al Dewery, stated that for internal reasons, the Socialist Union (the Independence Party's opposition ally) could not accept the idea of joint nominations. This comment was considered the Independence party's first criticism toward the Socialist Party.
An Independence party official said that the failure to develop a unified stance between all the opposition parties was the main reason for their failure in the legislative election. He also stated that the opposition parties had committed a strategic mistake when they could not agree on joint nominations, while the Independence party is still adamantly in favor of this idea.
Al Dewery commented in a letter which he submitted to the party's leadership that the enemies of the party wanted to distort the content of his message as it only called for an emergency conference to protect the unity of the party.
