Israel-Turkey, Military, 12/25/1997
While receiving the Turkish Deputy Minister of Defense, Tonger Killeng, Israel stated that joint naval maneuvers with Turkey and the USA will start on January 7 after they were deferred twice.
It was announced that Killeng who is a General in the Turkish army visited the Rophail Center for Military Research near Tel Aviv and that he will meet later with Israeli Premier Benjamin Netanyahu before he visits the Israeli Organization for Planes Manufacturing which is responsible for developing Turkish F-4 fighter planes through a contract worth $630 million.
Turkish ambassador Barlas Ozner stated that there is nothing new about Killeng's visit to Israel in order to acquaint him with current projects.
Israel offers training to Turkish pilots in exchange for permission to use Turkish airspace for the purposes of training within a military agreement signed by the two countries in 1996.
An Israeli military spokesman stated that the joint maneuvers with Turkey and the USA include search operations and naval and air salvage operations in the Mediterranean. Those maneuvers will enhance the abilities of the three countries' naval forces in dealing with emergencies.
The maneuvers will continue for one day but Turkish and US ships will arrive at the Israeli coast on January 5 and will leave on January 8.
