Israeli leaders hope Jordan or Palestine will disappear
Palestine-Jordan, Politics, 12/25/1997

With the realization that a Palestinian state is at hand, as has been acknowledged by many inside and outside Israel, there is a renewed effort to dilute and contain this new Palestinian nation in an Israeli wished for Palestine-within-Jordan state.

An Israeli opposition Labor party leader stated that he agrees with the conviction of the Israeli Premier Benjamin Netanyahu and the Israeli Minister of the Infrastructure that Jordan will be a Palestinian state within years.

Hiam Ramon, who is one of the strongest candidates to head the Labor party in collaboration with its current head Ehud Barak, said that it is inevitable that Jordan will turn into a Palestinian state in about ten years and that he now agrees with the views of Netanyahu and infrastructure Minister Ariel Sharon in this concern.

Ramon, who is currently the Minister of Health and Interior and the former chairman of the Israeli trade union, also said that not less than 70% of the population in Jordan are Palestinians and that with Palestinian, Israeli and international efforts, King Hussein will have to accept the idea of setting up a confederate or federal union that would include parts of the West Bank. He added that Israel will take only 10% of the West Bank which is inhabited by about 100,000 Jewish settlers.

He stated that he differed with the views of Netanyahu and Sharon in the past but now he is fully convinced of the inevitability of Jordan being turned into a Palestinian state within a few years.
