Police disrupt daily businesses in Jerusalem's old city
Palestine, Local, 12/24/1997
Palestinian shop owners in the Old City of Jerusalem complained of an exaggerated presence of Israeli soldiers and border police patrols next to their premises and said such a presence has deterred potential customers from going into their shops.
Israel decided to beef up the presence of its troops in the Old City of Jerusalem following the shooting incident that took place last month in which one Jewish settler was killed and another wounded.
Mohammed Said Tirhi who owns the building which was taken over by the Israeli police and has since been used as a watch tower in the area said the soldiers on the building's roof have been harassing the Palestinian neighbors in the area, mainly at night. "They sing loud at night and make lots of noise while people are supposedly asleep in their homes," he said.
