Moroccan-French cooperation in the electricity field
Morocco, Economics, 12/24/1997
The Moroccan Electricity Organization (MEO) and the Electricity Organization of France (EOF) reached an agreement to set up a power station in the area of Tahdarat near the city of Tangier at a cost of about 1.8 billion francs. This is the third electrical project initiated during the current year after the projects of the Garaf Al Asfar and Al Kida Al Baida.
Signing the agreement for the EOF was its chairman Edmon Alfandry, while the MEO was represented by Moroccan Minister of Electricity, Mining, Transportation, Trade Navigation, and Tourism Idris Banhima.
By virtue of this agreement, field studies will continue for three months together with a feasibility study covering the technical side of the project, which will be followed by setting up a joint Moroccan-French company to implement the power station whose capacity will be 400 megawatts. The production will start in 2002.
The Europe-Arab Moroccan Pipeline which transfers the Algerian gas to Spain through Morocco will provide the station with its power needs.
Meanwhile, the French Development Fund offered Morocco a loan worth $85 million which will be used to finance a project to extend irrigation channels to more than 10 hectares of fruit trees.
