Regional, Science, 12/24/1997

A three-day regional workshop on the control and monitoring of Ozone - Depleting Substances (ODS) consumption was recently held in Damascus. The workshop was held by Syrian Environment Ministry in collaboration with the UN Environment Program, UNEP.

The United Nations Industrial Development Organization's Investment Project Manager, Dr. U. Bysyuk, said he was at the workshop to monitor the implementation of investment projects carried out in Syria by UNIDO, particularly the domestic and commercial refrigeration appliances. He added that the workshop would propose practical guidance and recommendations to participants on how to improve efficiency and suggest strategies to their governments.

Salwa Jamal al Tayeb from Egypt said her participation in the workshop intends to foster the region's pursuit to adopt a unified system in monitoring and controlling ODS. The workshop's legal officer at the UNEP Ozone Secretariat, Gilbert Bankobeza said the main objective of the workshop is "to assist developing countries in developing a system of monitoring and controlling ODS."

The workshop was attended by experts from Iran, Jordan, Iraq, Lebanon, Libya, Egypt, Yemen, Saudi Arabia, Palestine, Tunisia, Bahrain, Oman and Syria.
