Dahlan : We reject any changes on the security understanding
Palestine-Israel, Politics, 12/23/1997
Chief of Palestinian Preventive Security Apparatus in Gaza Colonel Mohammed Dahlan stressed that the Palestinian side will not accept any changes on the Palestinian-Israeli security understanding that was reached recently between Palestinian and Israeli security chiefs with the presence of US representatives.
Dahlan said the agreement is a fair understanding for both sides based on reciprocity and the interim agreement. Dahlan blamed Israel for canceling a Palestinian-Israeli security meeting that was scheduled for Monday without giving any reasons. The meeting was supposed to witness the final signing of the joint security understanding, which explicitly speaks of Israel's commitment to fight Jewish terror against Arabs by the same token with which it demands the Palestine to fight Islamic militants. ³We were informed by the US officials that the Israelis want postponement for further discussions on the issue,² said Dahlan.
Sources at the Israeli PMıs office expressed their dissatisfaction over the understanding because it deals with reciprocity and because it does not include any item on extraditing wanted Palestinians to Israeli authorities, stressing that Netanyahu wants to conduct further discussions on this understanding which was suggested by the US in the first place. ³The sabotage is coming from Netanyahu, who does not want us to reach a mutual understanding between us and the Israeli security services because then, we will deprive him of the security pretext.² Dahlan said.
