Anti-Israeli operations escalate in South Lebanon
Lebanon-Israel, Military, 12/22/1997

Israeli artillery on Monday bombarded the al-Tuffah district's mountainous areas while the Israeli navy intensified its monitoring and blockade of Lebanon's southern coast. The aggressive shelling was accompanied by machine-gun fire at roads leading to the target areas.

Meanwhile in the course of the Israeli sea blockade, two Israeli battleships were seen anchored off al-Ameriyeh near Tyre, while Israeli gunboats roamed the coast extending from al-Sarfind town to the south of Sidon to Ra'as al-Bayadah area, to the south of Tyre.

Three Israeli helicopters flew over the southern coast while Israeli helicopters flew over the central sector.

In retaliation, Lebanese national resistance detonated an explosive charge at a Lahd's militia vehicle on Kafer Hana-Jezzine road, according to a statement released by the Lebanese resistance on Sunday.

On Saturday, Israeli war planes carried out provocative raids at low altitude dropping thermal balloons over the central and Western sectors and al-Tuffah district, while the Israeli artillery shelled areas adjacent to the occupied strip of South Lebanon.

The Lebanese national resistance group attacked an Israeli position in Tair Hafra with machine guns and rockets. In a statement the resistance said that the attack resulted in direct hits on Israeli troops and the destruction of some fortifications in the position.
